Elf Amerikaner graben nach ihren wurzeln
Gruppe forscht in Bischofsreut nach ihren niederbayerischen
urspüngen - familienchronik bringt Licht ins Dunkel
Eleven Americans dig for their roots
Group researches in Bischofsreut to its lower Bavarian
origins - family chronicle brings light in the darkness
One half year ago, was this group of Americans, mostly
strangers to one another. Now this Group of Eleven finds themselves together in
the Haidmuehle region. But not in order to make a typical vacation in the
Bavarian Forest, but rather to research their family roots.
Because they all have ancestors, who were born approximately
in the area of Bischofsreut-Haidmuehle and also in the borderlands. Loud and gleeful
chatting prevails in the dining room of the Maerchenwald Hotel in Langreut. The
11 men and women are finishing their breakfast, and like most mornings the talk
turns to those ancestors, who left the Bavarian Forest and surrounding area
almost 150 years ago to search for unlimited opportunities in America.
"To be a guest in the birth house of my grandfather is
quite inspiring says Charles Nigl of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Charles is sitting next
to his cousin Carla Nigl, also of Oshkosh, in the hotel dining room drinking
coffee. "We feel a great deal of our past here and it is quite
overwhelming" says Carla, "it is heart moving to simply walk in the
homeland of our grandparents".
The entire enterprise began almost 4 years ago, when Karl
Berger, owner of the Hotel Maerchenwald in Langreut, Invited Charles Nigl to
attend the 300th Birthday Celebration of Bischofsreut, which in no event would
Charles wish to miss. Charles used the internet to spread the word and got the
stone rolling. As time passed, more and more Americans expressed a desire to
make the journey. Eventually 17 persons would make the journey, coming from many
states in the U.S.A.. Ralph Schneider and Jerrie Wiltgen from the state of
Texas, Mary and Laurie D. from Illinois, Ken Madl from Colorado, Peter
Kindermann from the state of Ohio, Michael Steiner from Minnesota, the rest of
the group originated from the state of Wisconsin, all flew into the Airport at
Munich,Bavaria.
Once the group reached Bischofsreut, they immediately began
the work of searching for their roots. A great help was " The Chronicles of
Bischofsreut" written by Genealogist Norbert Madl. Many of those who emigrated from the Bayerwald did so because
of extreme Poverty, unjust laws, and the prospect of unending military service,
stated Norbert Madl. Also contributing
greatly was the hobby genealogist Peter Kindermann of Ohio, who presented to
Father Heinrich Anzeneder, a toilsome and detailed work, containing photographs
and family trees of past inhabitants of the Bischofsreut region who made their
way to America. Father Anzeneder acknowledged that this work will be a great
help to any Bavarian-Forester, who might wish to find information about lost
relatives.
It is apparent that to this Group, it was a great honor to be
able to visit the local cemeteries in the area, and see where their ancestors
lie buried. The Group as almost one voice states the following, the
Bavarian Forest is a beautiful landscape, the Beer and Food are much better than
one finds back in America. Only Ralph Schneider seems to hesitate, and then
makes a joke to Charles Nigl, "wasn't it, your grandfather, who established
Nigl' s Bar in Oshkosh, where the famous Chief Oshkosh Indian Beer was
sold"? Answers Charles "Bavarian Beer is much better than Chief
Oshkosh Beer". Even if the searching cost much trouble and work, for
Charles Nigl, it all seems worthwhile. " We have discovered that all of our
group can trace our relationship back to one couple, who once lived in this
corner of the world." bringing for Charles Nigl light where there was once
darkness.
After attending the celebration in Bischofsreut, things which
were once murky or distorted have now become clear and brought into order. Thus
the number of participants at the next Nigl Family Re-union will be greatly
increased.
At our last family re-union, we all had to wear name
tags because we were not very familiar with one another " laughs Karla Nigl.
While the Group continues to discuss their grandparents and
their past life's, attention switches to an elderly German woman, who has
traveled from Munich, she is asking assistance into searching for her ancestor
Johann Weber, who emigrated to Wisconsin, several of the hobby researchers
recognize the name, photos are exchanged, and soon it is realized that a
relationship exists between some of the group and this Johann Weber. So
small is the World.

First let me say a big thank you to Norbert Madl for writing this book.
There is an incredible amount of information on each family that lived in
the village from its founding to the present day. You will be able to
construct a family tree all the way back to when your ancestors first
arrived, the book is that complete. In fact a new project could be to
construct a family tree for the entire village, because all the names will
be connected at some point. The amount of work that
went into this book is astounding. Just keeping all the names and dates straight
is simply amazing. (can you tell I am very impressed) A copy of the book has been donated to the Oshkosh
Public Library by Norbert. It is written in German but you will be able to read names and
dates. It is over 800 pages and
lists sources of the information. Even if your family is not from
Bischofsreut you should take a look at it anyway.

opening Paragraph
Amstrichter vorstand.

As you can see house histories
can be quite detailed and can easily help you find several more
generations back in your family tree. So if you find a Chronik of a
village be sure to buy it or at least look thru it and try to make
copies. |
